Another thought!

Why not use blogging to have my students come up with their own question and answer session in the blog? Or, they could come up with their own picture prompt. (All in Italian or Spanish, of course!) I would just provide the students with the topic.

The latter part of the assignment could be to choose three classmates' prompts or questions, and reply correctly. I would certainly preview all the comments before posting them to the site, but this would be a great tool to practice.

  1. I liked your idea of having the students answer or come up with their own questions. I have my students answer questions from a book called The Book of Questions for Kids, they also have an adult verison. It allows the kids to think outside of the box to answer questions. I also like the way the students need to respond the other students posts, just like we havt to do for school. I like your ideas.

  2. I liked your idea about having students participate in providing a prompt for other students to answer. I also have my students respond to questions from the kids book of questions. I am not sure of the author from the top of my head, but I believe it is by Gregory Stock. It is a great resource to have the students think outside of the box.

  3. Hi Marcella,
I read through both of your ideas and like them. I like how you want to use what your students are talking about everyday and what they are into. Having them create their own question or post a picture having to do with what they are studying would be good because it would be something that they are interested in or want to know more about.

When you mentioned Facebook, it reminded me of something. I have a Facebook account and a group recently asked me to join. It was a group of people all having the same last name as me. I thought that this was very interesting and I am Italian, so a lot of the people were from Italy and had their posts in Italian. I'm wondering if you could have them use a social networking site to get a pen pal of some sort in another country. This way they could practice reading and writing the language they are learning. I'm not sure if using Facebook would be the best idea, but I bet there is some other way to do it.

Thank you for the book idea! I will look into it. I teach Italian, but could always translate the questions! Thank you!

  5. Hi Michelle,
It's important for me to incorporate what my students are into so they are more engaged in what we do.
Some ideas were recently thrown around about having students use their own facebook accounts to connect with people in other countries (namely relatives of mine or the other Italian teacher who we know would not do/say inappropriate things) to practice writing. I know people are hesitant to use Facebook, but it is an important social networking tool. Even sites that are specifically setup for schools to communicate internationally are prone to hackers. In fact, we had a problem several years ago, where an hacker got into our account and posted inappropriate comments to our students. I think anything that can be monitored, or where inappropriate things can be intercepted would be perfect.
